| LUC |
|
 |
Luc studied classical piano as a child, but
his interest in music wasn't fully ignited until struck by avant-garde
jazz as a teen. He studied at the Mass. College of Art in Boston
and toured the country with left-ended improv bands. Starting
with keyboards & accordion, he then took up the banjo, and the
musician who was first inspired by Cecil Taylor and Monk was
now headed down an unlikey backwoods road of improv that cut
across Appalachia. The influences Luc credits give some insight
into the uniqueness of his music: Bach, Cage, Mark Mothersbaugh,
Coltrane, Bela Bartok, Miles, New Lost City Ramblers, Terry
Riley, Wes Anderson... At times surreal and enchanting like
the anarchic sound of Animal Collective (trks
8, 9 & 11), other times the twisted country roots show. Vocal
contributions by folk singer Sarah Winchester
help define the truely original sound and feel of this unlikely,
compelling and groundbreaking avant-americana convergence. All

| MARGO |
|
 |
Margo's 2nd LP combines an exciting and fresh
mélange of sweet melodic electronic music with more direct fun-loving
indietronic sounds & beats. It is like attending a romantic
modern electronic ballroom function where dancey-groovy-electro
tracks are there to get you on the dance floor for a fun time.
But soon enough, the soothing sweet innocent voice of Melanie,
who alternates singing in French and English - is back to transport
you into a well-deserved warm dreamy world. Margo's sound hints
at melancholy. On trk 1 the purring solo of Margo's neighbor's
enthralling cat is here to charm you into the groovy first few
tracks, including the single, "Furies" trk2. The songs "Favorite"
& "Les Nuages" would be perfect soundtracks to la douceur de
vivre, a very French way of expressing a pleasant and serene
atmosphere of intimacy. "1 2 3" (trk4) is probably the French
response to "Number 1" by Ms. John Soda, which isn't
surprising given Margo's taste for music on the Morr
label (i.e. The Notwist). All clean. |

| SKALPEL |
|
 |
The Polish DJ duo Skalpel return with a deeper,
darker journey into the roots of Eastern European jazz. They
re-imagine a period in Polish history in which jazz was an alternate
reality and escape from the Communist regime as they infuse
this sound with 21st century breaks for modern ears. Cinematic,
cerebral, and funky, their impeccable sampling conjures up smokey
dives filled with top-notch musicians. Try trk 1 & 8 for a Cinematic
Orchestra vibe, trk 2 double bass-driven cool breaks,
trk 4 spy-tinged wah wah funk, trk 5 sultry vocals, trk 6 melancholic
horns over funky beats, trk 9 coming down off those espresso
jitters. The 2nd bonus disc contains remixes of tracks from
their debut album. All clean. |

| BUDOS BAND |
|
 |
The Budos Band is the quintessence of Staten
Island Soul.Their exciting new afro-influenced take on instru-
mental music features 11 pieces in all: drums, bass, guitar,
electric organ, trumpets, sax, and a percussion section employing
bongos, congas, tambourine, guiro, clave, shekere and cowbell.
The core of the band met as youths participating in an after
school jazz ensemble at the Richmond Ave. Community Center,
in Staten Island, New York. It wasn¹t long before their common
hunger for the rougher stripped down sounds of Soul Music brought
them together for late night ferry rides into Manhattan, where
they would sneak in the back door to hear bands like Antibalas,
Sugarman Three, & Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings.
It was there, in that basement hothouse packed with the only
the hippest James Brown devotees and Fela
Kuti disciples, where the kernels of instrumental Afro-Soul
were first sown into the fertile minds of these talented young
men - kernels which would later germinate into the roots of
their strong unique sound. All clean. |

Coldcut's new album "Sound Mirrors" is out
in the UK on 30 Jan. 2006, in North America 21 Feb. 2006. Coldcut
return with the first single from their stunning forthcoming
album, "Sound Mirrors" and it's a Hunter S. Thompson of a tune
(by which we mean larger than life, not quite sane and quite
possibly dangerous)... "Everything Is Under Control" is a brutal,
low-slung hybrid hip hop rock monster, featuring special guests
Jon Spencer (of Blues Explosion
fame) and Mike Ladd. |

2 years ago Bigg Jus (Company
Flow) left NYC for Georgia where he holed up with avant-rapper
Orko Elohiem. Together they put out the 1st installmentof
the Nephilim Modulation Sessions which
was an epic, blistering assault & analysis of the new political
landscape. This futuristic, abstract piece laid out the problems
of '03 in a fearful, raging & funny manner. "Imperial" takes
up where they left off, trying to provide some answers by using
an allegorical, galactic overview. They re-examine the constriction
of liberty at home and urge action on the part of the little
guy. The anger and sense of drama is emphasized by the artistic
tension and highly-evolved production leading to a brilliantly
executed musical innovation. PROFANITY: tracks 3, 4, 5, 8, 9,

| LOTEK HI-FI |
|
 |
Wayne "Lotek" Bennett
(long-time Roots Manuva collaborator) has released
an open-minded, optimistic record that manages to treat the
Caribbean heritage of his group's members with reverence but
also as a jumping off point for something uniquely English.
The gravelly vocals of Lotek along with those of Aurelius
(deep, rich & velvety) and Wayne Paul (fine reggae/street
soul sound) anchor the tracks as they move through hip hop,
dancehall, soca, ragga disco, classic bounce, and roots reggae.
Guests Roots Manuva, Sandra Melody.

AEM
|
|
 |
Jase Rex who records under the
rather self deprecating moniker Another Electronic Musician
(AEM) has been carving his own niche on the web for the
last few years has evolved his sound with mathematical precision.
Don't let AEM¹s moniker fool you though... he¹s not "just" "another
electronic musician" but a highly skilled programmer, producer
and songwriter. His evolution has brought him to a place where
an infectious mixture of stark thoughtful melodies, minimal
style production techniques, leg quivering low-end, and firmly
planted percussion flows with a serious head-nodding groove.
All of which are melded together in a complex yet honest space.

The 1st in a series of remix discs from Don
and Roel Funcken's Funckarma. Features
rare and previously un-released re-interpretations & remixes
of Plaid, Funkstörung, Speedy J,
Ra-X, Mr. Projectile... Don & Roel, one of the
most prolific electronic music duos around, have a long history,
working with a string of international artists and in various
projects: Shadowhuntaz (Funckarma + Non Genetic),
Quench. They've remixed Comtron, Sandor
Caron and Gridlock and released a grip of LPs
& singles on various labels (Skam, DUB, Neo Ouija, n5MD, U-cover).

CD
|
2005
|
|
 |
Amandine's sound is based around melancholic
yet stirring melodies played on piano, guitars and accordian
with brass and string additions and simple yet hugely effective
bass & drums. The Swedish 4-piece were signed off an amazing
demo in May 04. This debut provides a great introduction to
their plaintive, sweet and achingly beautiful songwriting. Influenced
and inspired by both classic indie and traditional American
Folk music and with a perhaps more apparent inclination towards
Alt. Country/Americana acts such as Songs:Ohia, Damien
Jurado, Iron and Wine or CSNY, they still
retain a keen sense of self, their songs perhaps reflecting
more than anything a sense of rural space, a reflective ideology,
and a natural leaning towards simply playing from the heart.

| ANIMAL COLLECTIVE |
|
 |
Animal Collective's eagerly-anticipated new
LP is a truly stunning, inviting, often heart-warming experience.
The band¹s 7th LP sees them again kicking off from their previous
release to explore a different direction. Where Sung Tongs
was largely acoustic-based and the product of band members Avey
Tare & Panda, Feels is a full group effort (also
including Geologist and Deakin). Moving further
away from folkish affinities, it is electrified, rhythmically
more urgent, and overall a considerably denser work. Those sweet
melodies and big catchy hooks remain intact, and the songwriting
is once again bold, brave and adventurous. Punchy, infectious,
immensely rich and varied, Feels is both hugely inventive
and tightly focused and sounds like nothing else right now.

| BLOCKHEAD |
|
 |
Blockhead (Tony Simon) follows
up last year's brilliant debut Music By Cavelight with
a dedication to his lifelong home, downtown NYC. Blockhead is
the man behind the beats of many an Aesop Rock track. He's also
featured on 3 tracks on the new Cage cd (Def Jux)
along with RJD2 and Shadow. This cd plays through
like a living soundtrack to NYC, from trk1's Shadowesque rolling
breaks over elegiac music, to the orchestral treatments on trk3.
Blockhead puts you into the varied settings of his neighborhood,
providing the musical backdrop to a mental movie, perfectly
capturing the musty darkness along side the bright lights, the
manic neon hustle and clutter along with the grey urban peacefulness.
Never been to NYC? Listen to this and you're there. All clean. |

With a critically acclaimed career & a hardcore

producer with whomever he liked - the cream of MC talent from
around the globe. But this time out he decided to gather his
closest musical collaborators together to create a true group
ethic and radically freshen up his approach in the process.
Swedish-Brazilian Yarah Bravo & Yank Blu Rum 13
are long term Vadim-associates (also working with TTC,
Canibus, Luke Vibert, Kid Koala).
Their voices, placed together for the first time, mesh into
a lyrical, melodic blend which summons up memories of the best

Blu Rum's gruff, musical growl the ideal foil for Yarah's sweet,
octave-hopping, spoken word stylings. Profanity: trks 5, 8,

Run_return is a trio of urban east coasters
who have been calling Northern California their home since the
new century. The crew formed in Santa Cruz, CA in 1999. R_r
makes electronic music with dubwise values, and employs digital
processing in addition to traditioinal instruments and vintage
synths. This debut LP is designed to take the listener on a
ride through the blurry borders between musical genres. Parts
rock, post-rock, jazz-fusion, IDM, and ambient, Run_return only
wishes to share with the listener that which it perceives to
be beautiful. There are no deeper subtexts, only abstract references
to that which has moved them as individuals and as a group throughout
their lives, past and present. All clean. |

bouncy beats and funky grooves (especially trk2, the addictive

jazzy breaks (trk 9), heavy robot-hooligan bass (trk 11), all

ALL THE PLANS
RESTING
|

CD
|
2005
|
|
 |
The triangle offense of Arch (guitar, vocal),
Hilts (keyboards) and Gittes (bass) came together in Vancouver
to create urban soundscapes and accounts of rainy nights and
streetlight life under networks. With drummer Luc Casio, the
young cadre released 1997's defiant and morose "The Dramatic
Balanced" and then 1999's "The Block Alone" single. Not the
most prolific band in the world, but the foundation was laid
and the lanes paved for a more intense operation on the horizon.
Rising from the ashes of the dark droning psychadelia of Pipedream,
swingmen Dr. Roberts (drums) and dt (guitar, sound) signed on
as free agents in 2001 and the current line-up of Readymade
formed like Voltron. The stage was set and the result was the
second full length "On Point and Red" on Endearing Records.
OPAR saw Readymade move past the more old-school shoegaze elements
of the previous record and focus on more subtle dynamics, melody
repetition, and arcing arrangements trying all the while to
repel time, routine and responsibility. In the murdered years
that followed the group dispersed itself throughout every corridor
and row of Vancouver, always writing, slowly writing. Readymade
is again resurfacing in the 2004/05 season to deliver the third
record, "All The Plans Resting". Diverse and dense, with as
much acoustic as electric, pick your escape route and go. |

2005

 |
A young 4-piece band we chanced upon playing
in Brighton in summer 2001, Charlottefield's debut release came
with a single, 'Picture Diary', in our 7" series, which was
released in August 2002. The sound on this release sits somewhere
between Televison, Throwing Muses, Ride, early Hood and Fugazi,
though a list does little to explain their working these influences
into something of their own. The band have since gone on to
record tracks for Unlabel and Jonson Family, and have toured
with Cat On Form and The Phil Collins 3, as well as being involved
in a number of FatCat events. Since the FatCat 7", and a large
number of live shows, the band's sound has changed to become
harder edged and increasingly direct. |

PEST
|
ALL OUT FALL OUT
|
|
CD
|
|
|
Pest follows up last year's debut with
a journey into sound which combines an almost psychotic devotion
to genre-clashing with a love of the good groove, the kind
of band-against-the-world ethic you expect from punk rock
with a sense of humour which means they don't take any of
it too seriously. From the opening title track's fractured
funk, through the fast guitar licks of Pat Pong, on into the
sweet melancholy of Downward Steps, the cut-up symphonic rap
of Wu Ju, the locked African groove of Click Bitches, the
technoid G-funk of Ogres, through the squelching attack of
Cous Cous and on into the fairground psychosis of Donde Pesta,
this is an album that never sits still or plays to preconceptions.

|
|
CD
|

Formed in Brighton in 2001, The Mutts hark
back to an ideal synonymous with The Ramones, MC5
and CBGB's circa 1977. This debut LP was recorded in
2 weeks at Jacobs studio in Surrey with producer Marc
Waterman (Ash, Elastica) and showcases
a fuzzed up, delinquent strain of rock Œn¹ roll that oozes
a primeval spirit recalling the likes of The Who,
Black Sabbath and Motorhead. A ferocious
live act propelled along by the primal roar of lead singer
Chris Murtagh, the last year has seen the band
tour extensively with the Soledad Brothers and
The Dirtbombs. They play the US for the first
time Sept. 17, 2005 at Don Hill's in NYC! All clean.

Carlos Niño and Fabian
Ammon continue to put out some of the funkiest
sample-based/live instrumentation beat hybrids (with
previous releases on Soul Jazz & Plug
Research among others). Their new mini-album
is full of heavy, funky, groove-based minimalism with
a dash of cosmic Black Power politics, a love of jazz,
and enough bass to flatten planets. Flowing samples,
live instrumentation, and voices make up trks 1 & 7.
Trk 2 is an afro-funk shuffle named for Ammon's new

Trk1 rhythmically stutters an already rejiggered, IDM'd
hip-hop song with a New Wave hook, the lyrics unintelligible
save for 'we must.' Trk2 bobs & weaves past a warped
soul choir. Dowe chops up more unidentified hip-hop
bravado for trk3, bouncing tough-talking syllables on
a trampoline of tuneless synths until you could care
less what or who might being repped or pimped or whatever
behind the evil sonic kalideoscope. DJ scratches get

Dowe contents herself with tweaking what sounds like
weak IDM to a mind-bending extent." - Static Multimedia

Kid Koala, recorded for Tru Thoughts, Fly
Casual, and Ninja, and collaborated with Amon Tobin.
The urge to showcase his music in a better context live set
him about piecing together a LIVE TOURING BAND (plus a wistful
longing for the responsibility wrangling a touring band, handed
down from his dad's days in Fairport Convention). So here
we have 4 Bonobo classics taken off the laptop/sampler and

Jake Wherry & Ollie Teeba (aka

their innovative yet recognizable sound. With help from
Jean Grae on 4 tracks plus guest vocals from Cappo,
Roots Manuva, and French crooner Philippe Katerine
(providing a slow, funky elegy to Serge Gainsbourg),
they seemlessly mix their love for hip hop, funk, 60s library
music, orchestral soundtracks, and crime jazz. The wide
range of styles are connected by the detail paid to the
arrang- ements and judicious use of samples. Melancholic
instrumentals (trk 3, 12), the posse cut by the Generals

Formed in 1999 to create a cohesive synthesis

loops, ethnic strings & winds, acoustic instruments, samples
& electronics. Shenai choirs, woodwind ensembles, vibraphone
melodies, funk guitar, subsonic bass, acoustic drumset loops,
Ghanaian field recordings & ambient digital noise are seamlessly
woven together to form the backdrop for the volcanic maelstrom
